Sage MAS 90 and MAS 200 Version 4.4 On Its Way

Sage will begin shipping MAS 90 and MAS 200 version 4.4 on February 15 to customers who are current on their maintenance.  Version 4.4 includes  major upgrades of the Inventory, Bill of Materials and Purchase Order modules.  Inventory item codes can now be up to 30 characters, and customer numbers can be expanded to 20 characters.  General improvements include the ability for each user to set their own default preview magnification for reports.  If you are like me and need to set it to 150% to read the reports, this will save you from having to do that each time you open a report.  Further enhancements include User Defined Scripts in Custom Office, batch entry for inventory transactions, improved alias item visibility.

Support for Windows 7 is coming for both version 4.4 and version 4.3 in an update sometime in March.

For further details, see What's New in 4.4 (summary) or the 4.4 Pre-Release Guide (40 pages - very detailed).

Adobe Acrobat Security Issues

Over the past few years Adobe has added many bells and whistels to Acrobat, and has also started bundling some of its other software, such as the AIR platform, with Acrobat Reader.  This has made Acrobat an increasingly larger target for the bad guys.  Acrobat PDF files are increasingly common as well, so banishing them is not an answer.

We would recommend uninstalling Acrobat and using another company's PDF software.  Foxit Software offers PDF reader and writer apps that are faster to load and less expensive than similar products from Adobe.  Open Office is a free and open source replacement for Microsoft Office that can produce PDF files natively - instead of printing to Acrobat, just Save As PDF.

If you must use Acrobat, here is how to keep it as secure as possible:  If you have an Adobe Reader version earlier than 9, uninstall it immediately and install version 9. Then go to the Edit/Preferences menu. Make sure that Security(Enhanced) is turned on; for some bizarre reason, Adobe recommends it being on but seems to ship it turned off. Next, look at the Updater item and be sure you're checking for updates -- inevitably they are security updates and you'll want them ASAP. Then go to Trust Manager and uncheck the option for "Allow opening of non-PDF file attachments." Finally, unless you know you need Javascript in your Acrobat documents, disable Javascript.

Paperless Office Preview Gotcha

Sage Mas 90 and Mas 200 Paperless Office offers both time and paper-saving features. We have found one “gotcha” that may result in you missing some registers or journals in modules where you are using Paperless Office. When you “Print” a Journal or Register from one of these modules, the system will create a PDF document for that document – however when you “Preview” the document, and then update the document from preview, the system will NOT create a pdf-copy of that document. Solution: Go to Role Maintenance in the Library Master module. For all users who can update Journals or Registers, go to their roles and make the following change. Under Security Events, go to each of the modules you are running as “paperless”, and un-check the option to Allow Updating of Journals from Preview. This will insure that you “Print” (paper or pdf or both) all Journals and Registers from that module before updating. If you are using Paperless Office, please make this change.
